Lakeside Garage with Second-Story Guest Suite
What started as a detached garage became one of our favorite projects: a full second-story living space built right on top, giving the homeowners a private guest retreat steps from the lake.
We framed the new upper level with ZIP System sheathing and room-in-attic trusses, creating usable living space under a steep gable roof that matches the character of the property. The exterior pairs crisp white lap siding with black trim and natural stone wainscoting, so the addition looks like it was always part of the original design.
Upstairs, the suite has everything a guest needs to feel at home:

Tucked into a private, wooded acreage in Elk River, this custom rambler blends timeless craftsmanship with modern comfort. The exterior pairs dark board-and-batten and lap siding with natural stone and warm cedar timber accents, creating a striking look that feels right at home among the trees.
Inside, more than 4,200 finished square feet across two levels offer room for everyone. The main floor has 10-foot ceilings and a vaulted great room with a gas fireplace. It flows into an open kitchen and dining area with a large island and walk-in pantry. The primary suite is a private retreat with a raised ceiling, walk-in closet, and spa-style bath with a freestanding tub. A mudroom with built-in lockers and a convenient laundry room handle everyday life.
The finished lower level is built for entertaining, with a family room, billiards area, wet bar, and dedicated theater room. It also includes two additional bedrooms and a storm-safe room. An oversized angled garage gives plenty of room for vehicles, toys, and tools.
